Our sympareotis Frank (aka Φώτης) was the lucky winner of the "flouri" as about 40 members of the Sabbatoparea (some with their adult children) gathered at Athan's in Brighton, Jan. 26, 2013, to celebrate the cutting of the group's Vasilopita and the New Year. The mood was festive and the camaraderie evident among the sympareotes. In fact, the lack of live music this time gave members a better chance to mingle and talk to others who do not attend regularly the Saturday gatherings.
The group sang "Πάει ο Παληός ο Χρόνος," and enjoyed the fabulous food donated by Aristeidis--μελιτζανάκι τουρσί (καλαματιανό), ψάρι πλακί με πατάτες φούρνου, σουτζουκάκια με πιλάφι, εκμέκ και σάμαλι. The vasilopita was made this time by Virginia, wife of sympareotis Hristos) from an old Hania traditional recipe. The coin was an old Byzantine coin depicting Empress Theodora, wife of Justinian.
Service was provided by two servers who know the group well--Margaret and Erin (Ειρήνη).
