Parea friends receive major awards

Our parea fared well at the New England Hellenic Medical and Dental Society Hygeia Awards dinner Saturday at the Cathedral Center. Dr. Stella Kourembanas, a loyal friend of the parea and wife of sympareotis Alekos Mitsialis, was awarded the Hygeia Award At the same event their daughter Vanessa, a second year medical student at Harvard Medical School and Sophia Paraschos, daughter of sympareotis Manolis Paraschos and his wife Janet, received scholarships from the organization.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Kourembanas, Chief, Division of Newborn Medicine and Neonatology at Children's Hospital, recalled incidents from the start of her medical career and explained how medicine has advanced in the care of the newborn. She also stressed the importance of continuing to mentor young Greek Americans as they prepared for a career in medicine. It is "our responsibility," she said to prepare them for a life in care giving.

Sympareotis Dr.Theoharis Theoharides, who presented the award, praised Dr. Kourembanas for her expertise as well as her dedication to Greek American causes, including her faithful participation in the annual Kalanda singing (check blog archives) to raise money for ailing children from Greece and Cyprus, who come to Boston for specialized medical treatments.
