After weeks of pressure, Vaios, the Megas Hrimatarhis finally agreed to allow his wife and friends to celebrate his birthday. So, Sunday evening Oct. 18, 2008, the Sympareotes got together at Athan's for a fabulous meal, thanks to the talents of the Arhisymposiarhis Aristeidis, the new Polyteknos. Music was provided by the tremendous trio of John (bouzouki), John (guitar) and Makis (baglama), who took us through a memorable stroll of modern Greek songs all the way to rebetica of questionable legality! Vaios graced us with a Zeibekiko of heroic proportions, which inspired Alekos to get up and shower him with dollar bills--yes,
even in this economic environment, some habits simply refuse to die.... Bougas would have been jealous.
