Sabbatoparea's Semi-Gala a huge success

Sabbatoparea's
Semi-Gala
event is
a huge
success

BRIGHTON, Mass, 12/27/07. An unexpectedly large and enthusiastic group of sympareotes and their families participated in the group's first semi-gala occasion last night at Athan's. The group was treated to fabulous food and drink generously offered by Aris in celebration of his son's third birthday (see photo of young Phaedon with his birthday cake on the left).

The group was also treated to another first--apostatis Harry danced with gusto and meraki, apparently not at all bothered by his LA-necessitated protective cork.

The music of the one-and-only Dimitris on the bouzouki, along with the guitar playing of Makis and Theoharis provided ample opportunity for singing and dancing. Especially impressive were the dances of Stella, Rita, Vanessa and Theoharis. People threw a considerable amount of money on the dance floor in their honor. (It should be noted, that the money in this affair appeared to be single dollar bills, unlike the hundred dollar bills normally thrown during a Bougas performance, but that's another story.)

Manolis read to Harry the proclamation (see another blog entry below) that expressed the group's separation anxiety. Harry responded in kind--he promised to find excuses to visit often (let's faced it, where in LA is he going to find such good food and music for free?). Among other things, he confessed that he now considers himself bicoastal.

Members of Sabbatoparea's next generation appeared to have a grand time as they made new friends or reacquainted themselves with old ones.

URGENT: Legal Seafoods ads tasteless....

I called the corporate office of Legal Seafoods, I identified myself and said I was a long-time customer. I spoke to Ann Flannery and someone named Ayda Saben (unsure about her last name), another person at the marketing office. I asked if the LS ads I saw on "youtube" (search under Legal Seafoods) were real or a joke. I was told the ads are real and they are for radio. (I was informed later that people have seen them on TV.) Both women thanked me for bringing my concerns to their attention. They said people have been calling (some with positive, others with negative remarks) and they are monitoring the situation. Ayda was sorry I was offended.

I complained that the ads were based on unfortunate stereotypes of the nationalities involved (a Greek fisherman, a French maitre d' and a British chef). As far as Greeks go, I told her I thought they unfairly portrayed Greek fishermen as slow or lazy and dishonest. The fisherman featured in the ad, one Larry Papadopoulos, the captain of the fishing boat “Santorini”, allegedly stayed fishing at sea either one day or three days or two weeks, a sign of either incompetence, laziness or inability to tell time. (I don’t know what to make of his remark "I could use a shower.") Unfortunate also was his portrayal as a cheater on freshness―he admits that the fish he allegedly caught may not be fresh and could be frozen, something makes him think he is an "embarrassment to my family, my fellow fishermen, my dog," and turns him to drink ("I'll be at the bar...").

I have no problem with LS’s claim that it “if it isn’t fresh it isn’t legal” but the promotion should not be done at the expense of hard working, honest Greek, French or British folks.

The ad campaign appears to contradict the company’s “Core Values,” which are “honesty, fairness, respect, and responsibility,” and the company’s commitment to be “truthful, fair and genuine on all levels of communication” and to “welcome the changing face of a diverse workplace and clientele by encouraging candor from all constituents.”

This xenophobic ad campaign seriously undermines LS’s dedication to its signature policy of "Return of Guest."
